Research and Initial Ideas

            Examples of opening sequences

The following is research I have done into different types of film introduction sequences. While some of these examples have a higher scale of production, we can use these as inspiration for our own introduction sequence:

We then came up with different ideas for the elements that we will include for our film, this included coming up with ideas for locations, concepts for our characters etc. After discussing these ideas as a group, Ben M came up with a moodboard for the ideas that we had disscussed in class.

The image to the left is a mind map that we created together showing the different types of genre that we could have made our single camera production from and the various advantages and disadvantages of each one.

Ben then made another mind map and expanded upon our previous ideas after a number of group discussions. After discussing as a group, we thought that the most suitable genre for our own production would be a psychological thriller for a number of advantages compared to other genres which are shown throughout our work:

Here is a mind map I then created which was more specific to our chosen genre of a Psychological Thriller.

Character Development

Mind Maps

The following is the work we have produced throughout Pre-production in order to develop the main character in our film. Here is one of the first parts of our character development, the ideas for our character were created as a group and we equally contributed to ideas about our character. Here is a mind map created by Ben showing some of the ideas that we came up with about our main character:

Jason then created a computerised version of this on an online mind map creation software tool named bubbl.us.

Here's an audio recording of one of our group discussions about what our character may be like:

The Image to the left is a drawing I have made based on some of the ideas we came up with as a group. It shows what kind of clothes and costume our character will wear and highlights his attitudes and personality:

Single Camera research

The following is an oppening scene within the film "lost signal". Within this opening scene the producers have done a superb job within the use of camera angles, for instance the use of having a low angle camera shot when he is walking through the woods looks very effective, also the use of having the camera watching him with the camera in the trees as if someone is watching him in first person looks very effective too. Furthermore, at the end of the scene the shot goes completely black after being caught by a man leaving the audience on a cliffhanger weather or not the man has hurt or even killed the man. In addition to this, the use of having the black out in my opinion would look very effective within our opening scene especially when the police knock on the door and then the ending is black with the name of our film would leave the viewers on a cliffhanger weather or not he will escape or gets caught.

The following is an oppening scene within the film "Inner Dead". Within the opening scene of inner dead, the opening is similar to how we want ours, with the man waking up suddenly after a flashback. From looking at this opening scene, the use of waking up from the nightmare (or flash back in our case) does in fact look very effect and leaves the audience wondering why she looks so panicked after the nightmare. Furthermore, within this opening scene the use of flashbacks they used did look very effective, as they were leaving me questioning why has this happened? Who is the other person? And also I wasn’t sure if it was a flashback or not until it was over which left me intrigued to know even more what’s happening which is the same effect were looking for with our flashback. Similarly to “lost signal”, the ending of the opening sequence went pitch black again with the name of the film just after we see the other character gets closer to her and this use of a cliffhanger leaving us wondering if she will be okay is very effective and I’m sure within ours we get the same effect.

The following is some research that Ben M has done into single camera productions with a similar budget. This research highlights which elements are most effective  in other productions which can be used for inspirtation for our own production. As a group we watched a number of different openings which helped us to get ideas for our own production:
